WHY CHOOSE A WIREHAIRED POINTING GRIFFON?
BREED HISTORY
The origin of the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is not clear, as the original breed developer, Eduard Karel Korthals, was born in Austria, but suspected to have developed the Griffon breed in Germany. The breed began in 1873 but was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC), in 1887. This breed is also known as a "Korthal" based on the founding father's name.
PHYSICAL
Wirehaired Pointing Griffon's vary in size and weight based on their sex. Males stand 22-24" at the shoulder and females stand 20-22". In respect to weight, adult males can weigh anywhere from 50-70 lbs and females are generally between 35-50Â lbs. Wirehaired Pointing Griffon's are an overall healthy breed and their life expectancy is 12-15 years.
PERSONALITY
Griffons are well known for their intelligence, loving nature, and versatile nature. They are not known for being "yappy" dogs and are overall quite quiet with minimal training required. They are eager to please their trainer and quite playful. These dogs are good with kids and strangers,  and can adapt to nearly any environment.
AS A HUNTING COMPANION
Griffons are the very picture of an honest, hardworking sporting dog, whose handsome looks are the result of a noble and unaffected ruggedness rather than fussy grooming. These dogs make excellent hunting companions as a pointer on dry land and an excellent water retriever, complete with webbed toes for swimming.
AS A FAMILY PET
Outgoing, eager, and quick-witted, Griffons are incomparable in the field and loving at home. These versatile hunting dogs are a joy to be around both in, and outside the home. From their well-tempered personality, loving nature, and moderate size, these dogs make excellent family pets.
ALL ABOUT THE HAIR
Wirehaired Pointing Griffons, as the name suggests, have wire hair. The minimally shedding Griffon coat has a harsh outer coat with a soft, insulating undercoat. This thick coat gives them an unkempt appearance, matched with a moustache and unique eyebrows. The recognized colours for Griffons are brown and grey, as well as chestnut and grey.
EXERCISE NEEDS
Wirehaired Pointing Griffons are especially active as puppies, and are very intelligent, social, and physically powerful as adults. They require do require daily mental and physical stimulation, or they can become bored. The ideal Griffon household is one in which the family is active and include their dog in their daily routines.
